Bonding?

I mentioned in an earlier post that I enjoy cooking. It's also something I enjoy doing with my girls---most of the time. I'm not gonna lie, there are some days when they wanna help and I just wanna hurry and get things done without working around 2 extra little people & 4 extra arms & 20 extra fingers & 2 chairs. But, they enjoy it. I've been told time and time again how quickly the years pass and I will miss this someday. I know I will. Loren even gets in on the cooking action.

We make the dinner and sit around the table to eat it--or force the kids to eat it. Either way works for me. Besides, once we give syd insulin she MUST finish her plate. She hasn't learned how to manipulate this yet...I'm hoping she doesn't figure it out for a long while. I've gotten pretty good at making things from scratch and giving the carbs a good SWAG. (I learned this acronym from Casey. It stands for Scientific Wild A** Guess.) It's very fitting in the diabetes world.

Last night the girls helped me make pizza. I prefer making it at home rather than buying it because I can roll the crust super thin to help alleviate the carbs for Sydney. Pizza is a difficult food for diabetics because it is a slow absorbed food--meaning the insulin works faster than the body can absorb the carbs. So they drop low. Then you have to treat the low. Then as the rest of the carbs are absorbed and the carbs you gave to treat the low kick in, they spike very high. The best way is to spread their insulin out over the course of 1 1/2 hours or so--one of the many perks of having a pump. They have a specific feature just for foods like pizza and pasta! Anyway, the thinner the crust, the easier it is on Syd. Here are some pics...enjoy!

~Helping put the toppings on.

~They are silly girls.

~Helping make the salad and sneaking cucumbers. I don't think very many actually made it into the salad.

~Tearing the lettuce into managable, bite size pieces.

I didn't get a picture of the finished product so you will just have to use your imagination. :-)

:). Too cute! I'm impressed with your cooking skills! Pizza has yet to affect Avery in this way- but it's only a matter of time, I'm sure. You inspire me to cook more!

I spy something yummy on the cooling racks too!

Would love your dough recipe. I never made pizza before...but think the boys would LOVE helping in the kitchen.

I love cucumbers...too bad they're not comfort food for me. :( Wouldn't it be awsome if we were stressed and all we needed to reach for was a cucumber???

I'm off track...cute pics. Cute girls. Cute Momma. :)

haha Meri...Lorens boss gave him a bunch of very ripe bananas. Yes, weird I know. Anyway, I made several loaves of banana bread to pass around to the neighbors. If I didn't, I would eat them all! No joke!

Meri I will email you the pizza recipe. Sometimes we will divide the dough up into personal sizes and the girls can make their own. They love that too!

I imagine that it tasted good! I wish I could get my kids to cooperate in the kitchen. That would have ended in disaster around these parts!

I'll take a large pepperoni and ranch with that salad!

Looks like they loved helping mamma! I'm too much of a control person to ease up with cooking....sigh.

Hi Shamae! I am new to your blog, as I just found you through the D-Mom blog.

I have three-yr old boy-girl twins. My son, Jacob, was diagnosed at age 2, so Type 1 Diabetes has been part of our lives for a little over a year now.

I too, use the SWAG method - although I had no idea it had a name! =)

I have enjoyed looking through your blog and reading stories that are so familiar to our own.

I love how the girls are enjoying themselves. We love pizza too, if Katy does have Celiac we will have to find a good recipe. We like ours thin crust, but for different reasons than Syds. You asked me why I can't paint anymore. Mostly it is a time factor. I hate being interupted when I am painting, and with kids, um that is impossible. Also paints are very toxic, so until I am not breastfeeding, I worry about lead, terpentine and other chemicals absorbing into my milk. I have learned how to make it safer, or almost completely safe, I still worry though. Thanks for all your comments. Take care and I love keeping up with you.

I've never heard the term SWAG before! Love it! Do it all the time! :)

If you have a good pizza crust recipe and wouldn't mind sharing, I'd love to have it. I enjoy cooking with my kids (on most days) and think they'd enjoy making pizza. Looks delicious!

We also love to make pizza at home. Not for the same reasons as you ( I have to be careful), but because I think it is a fun family thing to do.

I also love the fact that your kids love cucumbers. That is one vegetable my kids have not tried yet..but now we will :)

One other thing. I know you have lots of blog you follow that are mom's with T1 kids. This is the link two one of the mom's in our twin network. She has two sets of twins and a son with T1. Like all of you she amazes me so I thought I would share her link with you.
