Throughout the Type 1 blogging world there has been much discussion about the disservice the Oprah/Dr. Oz show did to the Type 1 Community. Huge, HUGE disservice. This year when we fund raise for JDRF, the problem we will face is dealing with people who saw that show and think that we, as parents, did something to cause our children to have Type 1 Diabetes and that by a simple change in lifestyle we can also make it go away. If you follow my blog I know YOU, out in MY cyberspace, are not ignorant enough to think such a preposterous thought; however, this may surprise you, not everyone reads my blog or a T1 d-mom blog at all.
Sooooo we are faced with more hurdles to jump. Our guard is up to defend our honor and the decisions we made/make as parents. We are ready to shout, "No, Sydney did not get Type 1 Diabetes from consuming too much sugar." And, "Look at her, does she look overweight to you? NO!" And, if that doesn't work, I am prepared to open a can of whoop-a** on people who continue to think Type 1 and Type 2 are the same disease and can be "fixed" with the same type of protocol. They can't.
So, to my wonderful blogging readers, what I ask of you is for help. Help spread the word about the harm Oprah caused to the Type 1 Diabetes family. In casual conversation just bring it up, "Oh so you know that Oprah show last week about diabetes? Wow I can't believe the misconceptions they spread about Type 1 Diabetes. It can't be cured by diet and exercise. etc." Or, "So I know this super-cool lady whose daughter has Type 1--I read her blog--and I realized how wrong Oprah and Dr. Oz were..." Etc, etc. See it's easy. And YOU can help. YOU can make difference for us. YOUR help will bring money back to JDRF for a CURE! You can be part of my little girl's cure just by telling people that Oprah and that Dr. Oz-hole were wrong.
So, I'm asking for your aid. Spread the word. Help us out. Much love to you, my blogging audience! (Or if that doesn't sound appealing to you, you can always link this post on your blog.)
So this long winded post originally began because Leighann over at D-Mom Blog did a post highlighting people who discussed the Oprah/Dr. Oz debacle on their blogs. Mine was featured so I'm grabbing this cool widget to show you that I was highlighted on D-Mom Blog. She linked my post Change Happens Slowly. So thanks Leighann! You are awesome!

Great post! Together, we CAN and WILL make a difference!
Word of mouth is a powerful thing! We can make a difference. I know it!
Did Oprah actually say that type 1 diabetes could be cured by lifestyle? or did she lump them together (which is a HUGE mistake) ? Man--the damage one popular woman can do--I will spread the word--thanks for being such a courageous mom!
Great post Shamae! I would love to spread the word. I watched that show and thought of you and my other freinds with children who have type 1.
I would be happy to spread the "correct" word. Is there a link I can put on my blog for people to go too or where is a good spot for them to go...your blog???
Wendy that would be great. You can just put a link to my blog on your blog...or on your facebook. Either way. If you need more specifics...send me an email! TTYL and thanks!
I had a conversation w/ a mom whose 20y/o daughter was diagnosed w/ type 1 when she was 10. She was so mad that the misinformation of the disease is still being put out there. Will work hard to correct those who have been misinformed. Hopefully Oprah's office will get enough letters and emails written to them that they have another show to correct their mistakes.
Dang that Oprah!
