We went to training today and our wonderful educators, Deb and Nanci, got Sydney hooked up to her pump. I can't say it went without some drama. Sydney was screaming the whole time. I felt like we were back in the hospital. She cried. I cried. Like I said--dramatic. I know it was just new and it will get better but it was pretty intense for a bit. It will be nice only doing a shot once every 3 days compared to 4 shots a day. There is a lot to learn about the pump but I know it will get to be more familiar. They said her sugars will probably run higher for a while why we try and fine tune the insulin amounts again. We have to adjust the numbers for the next little bit until we figure how much insulin she needs.
Her doctor did tell us that sometimes the pump isn't the best fit for a kid and if it seems like it isn't working and we aren't getting tighter control of her sugars to not feel bad about going back to injections. He doesn't think that will be the case but it does happen sometimes.
**UPDATE at 7:45 pm**
I accidently ripped sydney's port site out of her skin...all the way out. I felt so terrible. She bled a little (not a lot). We cried and then we had to go through the drama (although not nearly as bad as this afternoon) of putting a new site back in. It was an accident. We had gone over to our friend's house and the clip on her carseat got caught on the cannula and I didn't realize it. I lifted her out and it ripped it out of her skin. I saw the dangling part and realized what had happened. Anyway we got a new one put back in...w/out the assistance of a nurse. Yay us. But I just feel so terrible. I kept telling her all afternoon, "no more shots until Saturday!" She was excited. I was excited and then this happens. I know it was an accident and now we will be much more careful but I still feel terrible.
~My old roommate Nikki works at the diabetes education center. It was a pleasant surprise to see her there!
~Sydney with my mom before the pump got in. She was crying and kept trying to kick me.
~Still crying. I was trying to get her to smile...it didn't work. She doesn't actually have the pump in her hand. We just stuck the sticky part to her hand to show her that once it is in, it doesn't hurt.
~What it looks like inserted before the cannula is inserted.
~All hooked up.
~She's a pumper! You can see it sitting in her little pocket.

Oh, poor girl! I hope she adjusts to it quickly and that things go well with the pump.
Those pictures of her crying are heartbreaking. I hope this pump works well for her and makes life a little easier for you both!

Sydney you are such a brave girl!! I would be scared too. I hope the pump works great for you!!
We hook his pump to his diaper! You could try hooking it to her underwear or her PJ bottoms on the front or side!
Oh, Sydney! We love you! Way to go being brave! The pump and sight are cute & girly at least! Loves to you!
Try not to let it get to you about pulling her pump out. Even though it makes you feel bad, it doesn't make you a bad mom. You are an amazing mom. What a brave little girl Syd is. Give her a hug for me and tell her I miss her. She was so much fun to have in class. I seriously miss teaching that class.
Syd-You were such a BRAVE girl on Wednesday!! We are so proud of you! I hope you love your new pump...and I hope you have fun at the Halloween party!

Poor little girl to have to go through all of that! It's good that she won't be needing as many shots now!
