My American Idol Picks

I realize most of my blog is about my girls. Lets face it, between me and them, they are much more interesting. Despite that, however, I am going to do a blog post about one of my guilty pleasures--American Idol.

Every year from the first ear screeching auditions in January through the nail-biter finales in May, I am hooked. Before the first show ever airs, I set my DVR on repeat. Each episode, after my girls are in bed, my heart does flips waiting to see what these overnight sensations will be singing. I sit on the bed, pajamas on, grinning stupidly from ear to ear, wide eyed and happy with phone in hand. I boo appropriately and give standing ovations where deserved. It's like my very own Superbowl party each week. (My husband can attest to this although he is just as guilty as I am for his American Idol etiquette.)

Those who know me also realize this behavior is quite uncharacteristic for one as stoic as I. (ha ha ha I'm not really stoic. That was sarcasm in case you missed it.) But I have always hated reality TV and the only show that has ever won me as a patron is American Idol. One might assume its the sexy Ryan Seacrist or, my personal favorite judge, Simon Cowell that draws me in to each hypnotic episode; however, I would venture to say it's the contestants. At this part in the season I sit, partially green with envy, at their singing abilities. Even if they aren't my favorite, they all have talents I desire but don't possess. And while they could sing circles around me, I am still going to give you my American Idol picks. But, before I do, I have one little annoyance I need to share...

This past week the top 7 sang songs from the cinema. Matt Giraud was voted off the show but, because of the new "judges save," he will be back next week to swing his hips in disco week. This new marketing gimmick by the producers is absurd. This is a competition. Why have a judges save in a competition? I don't feel it increases the intensity of the contest. The joy of such a show is the fact that someone has to lose. Yes, Matt Giraud is very good and, yes, Anoop, should have been gone long before Matt but that's the name of the game. It's not the top 7 winners show...there needs to be 1 winner and, in order for this to occur, someone needs to go home each week. The inevitable was merely postponed. This week we will have to say goodbye to 2 idols so I just don't see much logic in the judges save. At this point everyone has had enough air time to pursue what could be a great musical career. I'm glad the save was used so it's now off the table.

Now lets meet the contestants who, unknown to them, are vying for a top pick on my blog. From L to R Adam, Matt, Anoop, Lil, Kris, Allison, and Danny.

I think this week we will say goodbye to Anoop and Matt. Matt didn't escape elimination for good. Did you ever watch that show Final Destination? It's the same principle: He can't circumvent his elimination. He isn't going to win the competition and he needs to go...although I would like to see Lil and Anoop leave first, then Kris, Matt, Danny and I hope to see Allison and Adam in the finale. Those are Shamae's American Idol picks for Season 8. **Disclaimer: Shamae's pics are subject to change from week to week.**

Those of you who are fellow American Idol junkies, what are your thoughts on the final picks as well as the judges save? Let's remember, if a discussion does ensue, to be polite and remember everyone is entitled to an opinion...even if it's different than yours. :-)

I am glad they saved Matt. If he picks the right songs, he is amazing. I really hope he does well tonight. I agree that Anoop and Lil should go tonight. I think I might be the only person in the universe that does not like Adam. Other than the amazing Tears for Fears song, he is too over the top and theatrical for my liking. I am really liking Kris lately. And Allison and Danny are really good too. I am hoping for a Allison/Danny Allison/Kris finale but I will be SHOCKED if Adam does not win the whole thing. He isn't nearly as good as David Cook was last year.

I'm a semi-Idol observer...we're more CSI people, but I like Danny :) He's my fav.

Ya Matt can be really good. I just don't think he is good enough to win it all. He is definitely better than a few who are still there though. I think there are lots of people who aren't Adam fans...I like him most of the time. The performance of his that I could not stand was his Ring of Fire. It was so weird/awful/yuck. Other than that, I have been very impressed with him. I love Allison though. She is so talented and so young! I would like to see her win it all!!

I am tuned in every week just like you, total fan all the way and our entire family attended the concert in SLC last year and I plan to go again this year! I am a HUGE fan of Kris Allen, LOVE HIM! I also like Danny Gokey. I like Alison but feel she doesn't have the fan base to make it all the way. And I think Adam's vocals are amazing, but feel he is getting super cocky! All in all I think this is one of the best seasons...

I'm totally a Danny fan- Adam is probably my second favorite, but there are just times that he does wierd stuff. I'm not a big fan of the judges save and hope they don't do it again!

Lorne thinks Lil and Anoop will be gone this week. I don't really know. I am kind of a fan of Danny but there are so many good ones it is hard for me to decide.

I haven't gotten into American Idol this year. My favorite reality show right now is Biggest Loser!

I think Adam is weird and crazy but I think he is probably the most talented of the group. I don't watch it too much because there isn't anyone as interesting as Jason Castro :)

I definitely see the logic in saving Matt. The judges can use their save when they feel that the person deserves another chance. I think Matt definitely deserved another chance and by looking at what happened last night, it didn't just save him for another week. Lil and Anoop went home. Yay!! My guess for the final three is Adam (even though I don't care for him at all. He screams too much), Danny, and Kris.

Hey so I know I'm late weighing in on this, but I don't read your blog that often, although I do enjoy reading your posts! You're such a great writer. But anyways back to the Idol stuff. I think everyone left is a good singer, even Matt although I'm glad he went home last night. But and as much as I like Danny, I think he should go next because Adam and Allison are both so versatile, and I just like Kris even though he kind of falls into the Danny trap and kind of sounds the same every week. I agree Adam's a little weird sometimes, but I think he's very entertaining! I love this season!
