Gardening 2008

Well its been a while since I have updated my blog. My faithful readers will be happy to see my update. Things have been going really well. I have no big complaints (except for the fact that it snowed on May 1...grr.) But the snow is gone and today was a BEAUTIFUL DAY! We spent most of it in the backyard doing yard work. The people who we bought this house from didn't have a great yard. It wasn't bad by any means but Loren is pretty picky about his yard stuff so we are working on beautifying it. In the pics below you will notice some bare spots. We are trying to make those goes away. We got about half of our garden planted. We now have peas, carrots and onions in the ground. We have to wait for it to get a little warmer before we can plant our beans, zucchini, banana squash and tomatoes...possibly watermelon. Anyway we are so excited to get this done because we love having a garden and fresh vegetables! We didn't plant enough peas to freeze this year but they will make a great summer snack. Fresh peas are the best. We also bought a cherry tomato plant. They will be fun too...basically eat them off the vine. We are also excited because we have 2 peach trees and an apple tree in our back yard! I will be canning peaches this year, but enough about that....

Last week we borrowed my mom's Sam's Club membership card and stocked up on a bunch of things for our storage. It felt so good to get more prepared in case we ever need the supply. With the way grocery and gas prices are rising, who knows when we will need it. The best part is that we have the space to do all this. We love having a house!

Sydney is doing really great. She actually helped me give her a shot the other day. That is a great big step for her. She had a doc appt last week and things are going pretty good. We are still working on getting tighter control of her sugar levels because most days they still creep up over 200 or 300. But for the most part things are going good. We have settled into a routine. Everyone once in a while it will just hit me again that Syd has diabetes and it isn't going away. It is hard to explain but just a realization that this is for real. That probably didn't make any sense whatsoever.

One of the most exciting things to report is that this upcoming Saturday, on May 10, I am GRADUATING!!! I am so excited. I have put my blood, sweat and tears into getting a degree. (OK not my blood but definitely sweat and tears). For as long as I can remember, it has been a goal of mine to get a college degree and now it is less than a week away. Last Thursday I officially turned in the last paper of my undergraduate career. Next week are my finals so wish my luck on those!! Anyway enough patting myself on my back....

Here are some pictures from our adventures in the backyard....
~~Riding in the wheelbarrow
~~Morgan and Daddy planting some peas.
~~Sydney planting peas.
~~Daddy making sure the girls were putting the peas
the right space apart from each other.
~~Mommy and Sydney planting carrots. The seeds
are so tiny they are easy to lose. Hopefully we don't find
any carrots growing in strange places!

~~The girls helping me plant some purple onions. Morgan
is sporting some dance move here...not sure what it was.

Wow! You are super-woman! School, gardening, mom of two kids...what don't you do? Yes, I will be calling you soon to get together for lunch or dinner before we leave. Let me know what day you get done with finals and we will plan something! Congrats on getting that degree!

Oh your garden sounds so nice! I want to grow a garden so much. We don't have a yard right now though, lol. Your comment about realizing over again that Sydney has diabetes, made total sense. Bethany was diagnosed with her autism almost a year ago and we knew long before the diagnosis that she had it. But even now, I still sometimes have those moments. I am glad Sydney is doing so well though. ((hugs))

Hey Shamae! I am sorry it has taken me awhile to get to your blog and leave you a little hello- That is awesome that you are getting your degree. You've made it look pretty easy and your kids always look happy and well taken care of. I'm excited for your yard project and your house. We are starting a siding project on our house in the next couple of weeks. Anyway, thanks for always being a friend, Shamae! Tell that crazy krystle to give me a call soon!
