My Latest Blunder

As a semi-superstitious person, I should have known Tuesday was going to be an interesting day from the get-go. We had a fun day planned. We were supposed to go to my mom's house to decorate valentine cookies and in the afternoon we were meeting my grandma and a local car hop restaurant for some famous root beer ice cream. My friend and her daughter were going to come with us; however, we woke up to a good bit of snow and the white stuff was still coming down. My mom lives about an hour from me and we decided not to chance the roads and we cancelled our plans. Instead we went to the mall to let our kids play in the play place, had lunch at Subway, and went sledding. Being the cool, fun mom that I am (ha ha ha) I decided to take my turn going down "Joshua's hill". The girls had a great time laughing as I came down on my belly, screaming down the entire length of the hill. They laughed harder when I came flying down on my behind, crashed and rolled the rest of the way down. Their laughter became hysterics when my voice reached a pitch I didn't know existed as I caught air and crashed hard on my behind. It was at that point I figured I shouldn't sled anymore because my tailbone was aching. I had a basketball game that night and wanted to save some clumsiness for the court. :D

The fun day with Jen and Kendra wrapped up and I went home, got my family dinner and got ready for my game. The game was going well. We were up by ten at the half. The second half started and about a minute into it I jumped for a rebound and came down on my ankle. A split second later I fell the the floor sobbing while an excruciating pain radiated through my leg and ankle. I was sure it was broken. I can't ever remember anything hurting so badly (and I've had 2 babies via c-section). To make a long story short, Loren got there and he and another guy carried me to the car...I couldn't put any pressure on it without feeling faint. Being carried was quite an accomplishment for these gents and quite an embarrassing moment for me, but we all survived. Loren took me to the ER where we got in quickly and they did x-rays. The poor ankle wasn't broken but it had a severe sprain. I was told to stay off it for 2 weeks (I have to use crutches which, from what I hear, is quite funny to watch). I have to wear this brace/cast thing for a month. On Monday I go back to the doctor to check for ligament damage because the swelling and bruising is so severe on both the inside and outside of my ankle.

The morning after "the incident" Loren had to leave for 3 days on a business trip. My wonderful mother came and got me and the girls and took us back to her house while Loren was away. My mom should get the "Mother Teresa" award for how well she took care of us. It was wonderful to not have to worry about the girls or anything for that matter. My mom handled everything and I can't thank her enough for her sacrifice. Thanks again mom, we loved spending so much time with you. Loren got home last night and took us home. Today I am doing pretty good. The ankle is still sore but the docs gave me some good meds and I am hoping it heals up soon. Unfortunately, for me, basketball is done for the season but next year I will be back at em! Here are some pics for those of you who have more morbid desires and would like to see the injury. Obviously a picture can't do justice to the actual thing, but it will give a pretty good idea of what's going on. Just mentally note that the bruising and swelling is worse in real life than in the pictures.

**Side note--at the hospital they gave me a shot in my hip for pain. Apparently she hit a blood vessel or something because it left a huge, nasty bruise. There is a pic of it below. Also I am writing this with some hydrocodone in my system so if it is clumsiliy written or sounds strange, blame the meds. ;)**

~Swelling on the inside...this is before the bruise set in.

~The bruise continued to spread up the back of my leg and down the top of my foot. This shows swelling too.

~The pic doesn't show it here but the bruise goes up the back of my leg and spreads further down the foot.

~Bruise from the shot.

~Me and my makeshift bed at my mamma's.

~More swelling..I wish the pics would show the whole bruise. I guess I need a better camera.

Oh wow, Ouch! I'm sorry you can't play basketball any more this season, that really stinks. I can't play either, and I can't even go watch because it's so depressing to think that I can't play! I hope you get feeling better.

Way to go girl! At least if you're going to bruise it might as well be a good one! I'm glad you put pics... I always say "Sick, sick, sick!" and then look at them all again. haha
I'd feel sorry for you if you broke it...but since you didn't and I know you're tough...I'll just tell you congrats on being a cool Mom who does stuff where she is able to get a bruise like that! You know I love you!!!!!

I am so sorry. Sprained ankles are no fun. I have had a few bad ones back in my playing days. Hope you have a quick recovery.
