Video of Syd Checking Her Sugar

I've been meaning to make this video for some time now and I finally got around to doing it. The first time Syd checked her sugar on her own was about 4 months after she was diagnosed. She was 4 1/2 and we were getting ready for bed. She said, "Mom I need my sugar checked for bedtime." I said, "Ok just a minute I'm helping your sister get her jammies on." A couple of minutes later Syd said, "My sugar is 89." I came into the living room and saw her sitting "crisscross-applesauce" with her glucometer paraphernalia scattered around her knobby little knees. I guess I should have realized since she was having her sugar checked 8-10 times a day, every day, she was bound to figure out how the process worked. Needless to say, my heart swelled with pride. My music player is at the bottom of my page, you will have to turn it off if you want to be able to hear the video. After I filmed her, Sydney said she was really nervous. I guess that explains her "nervous giggles." Anyway, enjoy the video and the multi-talented Sydney.

P.S. sorry for the sea-sick motions of the camera. I don't claim to be in the cinematography business. Also, it is impossible to keep my super cute 3 year old from singing in the background, so enjoy that as well. :-)

What a cute little girl! You don't know me, but I'm Erin Packer's sister in law Emma, and I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 4 also. I am almost 26 now. I just want to let you know that life is awesome and just keeps getting better! Hang in there!

Way to go Syd. We are so proud of you. Can't wait to see you in May. The girls have gotten so big. When we moved Syd was the big singer and now it looks and sounds like Morgan has caught right up with her.

How sweet! I don't think I could check my own blood sugar, I'm afraid of that initial "poke"! She is so sweet and cute singing in the background! :) Way to go Syd!

What an amazing little girl. I am sure as a parent there are days you just want to cry and take everything away and then walk out and stay strong for her.

I just came across your site and I also have a four year old daughter with type 1 (Olivia). I just showed her this video of your daughter checking her blood sugar. My daughter was smiling the whole time. It was her first time seeing someone that looked just like her (not an adult) doing the same of checking blood sugars. After the video she gave me one of the biggest hugs. Thank you for making her feel that she is not alone!

Wow Syd, I'm so proud of you. I have a 18 year old type one diabetic who was diagnosed at 15 months. We have lived with this for many years and I'm glad to see you setting such a wonderful example for others.
